Spartan Housing Cooperative, Inc. is a housing group dedicated to providing affordable housing to the communities of East Lansing and Lansing through the cooperative ownership model.
A cooperative, or a co-op, is a business that is owned and controlled by the people who use it. It is a democratic organization whose earnings and assets belong to its members. By patronizing and becoming an active member of a co-op, you invest in your ability to shape that business.
Living in one of the seventeen houses of the Spartan Housing Cooperative is an empowering and unique experience. As a resident and member-owner, you are responsible for helping maintain your house and keeping it in good condition for future members. But with that responsibility comes the freedom to live how you want: through member-driven renovation work, gardening, painting, meal plans, and even deciding how much you pay.
